Superior Fall Trail Races Ultra Marathon

General Positions

 

Ask any one runner why they run and the reasons are as broad and diverse as ones imagination; ask someone why they volunteer at a race and the answer is usually pretty much the same to give back to the sport that has given so much to them. This is never more true than it is with the small intimate trail ultras that many of us enjoy running. Many of these events are more of family reunion or an interesting cult gathering than a race and have a much different feel from the big city marathons (don’t get us wrong we love big city marathons too!)

The Superior Endurance Run has many great volunteers but we are always looking for more! Donate a day of your time, come help us at the start / finish line or work at one of the aid stations out in the park, it makes for a really fun weekend.

Volunteer Positions Available:

Course Marking and Sweeping
For the Fall Superior Trail Races we have to mark 100 miles of trail then when the last runner comes through, we follow behind, pickup the flags and any trash that may have been acidentally dropped.  This is a good way to get some miles on your feet and experience the Superior Hiking Trail.  Marking takes place on the Thursday before the race and sweeping starts as soon as the 100 mile race starts on Friday.

Packet Pickup
Help runners get their race bags, numbers, shirts etc., answer questions and help solve any problems that may arise.  There is a packet pickup in Two Harbors on Thursday Night before the 100 and on Friday night at Caribou Highlands before the 50 Mile and Marathon.

Race Start(s)
Help check runners in on race morning, help setup the start line, make coffee, answer questions etc.  The 100 starts on Friday at 8:00 AM at Gooseberry Falls.  The 50 Mile starts at 6:30 AM at the Finland Rec Center and the Marahon Starts at 7:30 AM at the SHT Parking / Trailhead off of Cramer Road.

Aid Stations
Spend a day (or two) in the woods with a bunch of friends and throw a party! Probably one of the most enjoyable and most rewarding volunteer positions.  This is the position that is in high demand, some of our aid stations have been manned by the same groups for over a decade!  Be in the thick of the race, helping runners, filling water bottles, making sure tables are stocked with food to keep the runners going, cheering and offering encouragement!  We have 13 aid stations, some are open for only a few hours while others are open overnight and into Saturday.  Bring a tent, RV, sleeping bag and plenty of friends!

Finish Line
Help with timing and recording runners, pulling chips, awards, putting on the post-race picnic, clean-up etc.  All races / distances finish on Saturday at Caribou Highlands / Lutsen

Clean-Up and Out
Once the race is done, the work is not done! We need lots of help on Saturday night and Sunday after the race, cleaning up and packing up.

Supply / Resupply / Roving
We setup 12 aid stations over an area of 100  miles and believe me this is no small feat!  Help with dropping off supplies, setting up aid station, tearing down aid stations, dropping off drop bags, picking up drop bags and resupply of aid stations!.  This is one of the tough ones – are you up for it?  A knowledge of the course and aid stations is very helpful.

Ham Radio
The Superior Trail Races has a longstanding relationship with local HAM radio operators and beyond.  If you are a HAM Radio Operator and have interest in working with the crack team for this event, please contact us and we will get you in touch with the right people. 

 

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

This race is probably pretty far away from where you live and we understand that.  If you need a place to stay before or after / during your volunteer comitment, we can accomodate you in a communal townhouse(s) specially set aside for our volunteers – all we ask is that you bring a sleeping bag and pad!

We understand that you are volunteering out of the goodness of your heart but that also, sometimes volunteering is part of a job, educational or race requirement – we will be more than happy to fill out the necessary paperwork verifying your time commitment to our event.
